What is commodity trading?

The practice of trading physical goods, i.e. commodities, is ancient. However, in the modern world of commodity online trading, there are additional opportunities such as buying and selling future contracts speculating on the future value of the underlying physical commodity. Common commodities are energy, metals, livestock and agricultural produce. Energy and metals are also called hard commodities, as opposed to livestock and produce that are called soft commodities.

How does commodity trading work?

Commodity brokers offer a number of opportunities, e.g. trading in future contracts, options or via ETFs. As with all trading, prices are determined by supply and demand but the difference here is that we’re referring to actual physical goods and their supply is affected by a number of factors which no one can predict, e.g. natural disasters. It’s important to research both your commodity of choice and current affairs in order to make informed decisions as to the direction of the market.
